Our background

The Modern Work Foundation started out as an initiative called 'SAFERjobs', which spawned from a Metropolitan Police fraud forum within Operation Sterling in 2008. It became an independent voice to provide free help & advice to work-seekers and gather information to help take down job scams.

Over time, we sought to broaden our work to look at the labour market more holistically. In particular, we realised the value of bringing together different voices to understand, assess and respond to problems.

Our journey

After the covid pandemic, we felt the time was right to begin formally researching and developing Collective Regulation as a way to bring together the voices of worker, business and government to collectively understand and resolve problems in the labour market.

We created the Better Hiring Institute to bring together employers and JobsAware to raise up the voice of workers, as well as founding the Modernising Employment APPG to provide a forum for policy discussion with MPs, Peers and civil servants.

We've only just begun this new phase of our journey and we're excited to work with a growing network of businesses, worker voice groups, research partners and policy makers to help make the UK labour market work better for everyone.
